New To Yoga?

If you are new to yoga, or recently returning, or tried it once and didn’t like it, this page has some thoughts for you. In particular, I sometimes hear the following:

“Yoga Is Not For Me, I’m Not Flexible”

Yoga helps anyone exercise and expand the flexibility they have. In yoga, you start where you are and go from there.  Yoga probably provides more benefit to someone with less flexibility to begin with.

“I Took A Yoga Class Once And….”

Perhaps you didn’t like it, or were sore afterwards, or perhaps you were even injured. Every yoga teacher and every class will be different, so maybe give it another try, and think about the following when you go:

  • Everyone Is Different – Every body, every mind, every hip, every neck, all are different. What comes easy or feels right for one person may be hard or awkward for another.
  • Its Your Practice – While the yoga teacher has a particular sequence in mind, you should modify the poses as you choose based on you: your experience level, your flexibility and strength, what is going on in your body today.  Its Your Practice.
  • Find What Feels Good – Follow, or modify, a yoga teacher’s sequence guided by what feels good in your body. Avoid any movements that are painful in a joint or muscle.
